A Neopixel lightsaber with a customizable blade color and high-quality hilt design, featuring stunning visual effects and sound fonts.

Neopixel Lightsabers Explained: Features, Pros and Cons

A Neopixel lightsaber has LED strips running the length of the blade, which gives it brighter color, smoother ignition effects and more dynamic lighting than a standard Baselit saber. It's the best-looking option for display, filming and light to moderate use. For hard dueling, Baselit's the better call. Here's what you actually get.

What makes it Neopixel

The LEDs sit inside the blade itself, in a strip along its length. A Baselit saber lights its blade from the hilt end instead. That one difference is why Neopixel blades can do more detailed effects, like the blade igniting and retracting smoothly, and richer lighting along the whole blade.

What you get

More vivid color, smooth ignition effects, and more going on in the blade than a solid color. The practical basics match our other sabers: a polycarbonate blade, a pre-installed rechargeable battery and a charging cable.

Some models come with extras. The Darksaber Neopixel includes a display stand, a blade plug and a belt ring, and the Darth Maul Neopixel is saberstaff ready and includes a blade plug. Check each listing for what's in the box.

Neopixel or Baselit?

Neopixel's for display, filming and light to moderate use. Baselit is for dueling and impact. The price gap on the same hilt gives you a sense of it: the Practitioner is $109 in Baselit and $209 in Neopixel at the time of writing. A lot of our hilts come in both versions, and you choose under Electronics on the listing. If you plan to swing it hard, read the best lightsaber for dueling.

Where Proffie fits

Proffie's a different layer. It's the soundboard technology in our programmable lightsabers, and it lets you customize blade colors, sound fonts and effects through software. Neopixel describes the blade, and Proffie describes the electronics that run it, so check each listing to see what a given saber uses. The programmable lightsabers are the place to look if you want full control.

Who it's for

Collectors and display fans, because it looks best on the shelf. Cosplayers and filmmakers, because the blade photographs and films well. And people who duel lightly, since light contact is fine, though heavy dueling is what Baselit is for. If you're not sure, start with Baselit. It's our most popular choice and the best value, and you can always add a Neopixel later. The full range is in the Neopixel lightsabers collection.

Two quick answers

Is it worth the extra cost? If you care about looks, display or filming, yes. If you mainly want to duel, Baselit's the better value. And do Neopixel sabers change color? Many of our color-changing sabers do, with Proffie models offering the deepest customization, so check the listing for your model.
