Anakin Skywalker carried two blue lightsabers of his own, borrowed a green one when he really needed it, and ended up with a red one as Darth Vader. The second blue saber is the famous one. He built it after Attack of the Clones, Obi-Wan took it after Mustafar, and it eventually landed in Luke's hand. Here's the trail, and what to look for if you want a saber inspired by one of them.
The first saber lost to a factory
In Attack of the Clones, Anakin and PadmΓ© break into a Geonosian droid foundry to rescue Obi-Wan. Anakin gets knocked down and pinned under the machinery, and a descending mechanical blade slices his lightsaber in half. It's a rare case of a Jedi losing a weapon to an assembly line instead of a Sith. He ends up borrowing a green-bladed saber for the final duel with Count Dooku, which isn't how anyone wants to walk into a fight with a Sith Lord.
The second saber, the one everyone means
After Geonosis, Anakin builds a replacement. It has a blue blade and was designed on the model of the first one, and he carries it through the Clone Wars and into Revenge of the Sith. Sources disagree on exactly when he built it, so be a little suspicious of anyone who gives you a date to the day.
This is also why the prequel-era Anakin hilts look so alike. The second saber copied the first, so a replica inspired by Attack of the Clones and one inspired by Revenge of the Sith can look like close cousins. That's not a mistake in the replica.
Mustafar, and the long way to Luke
After the duel on Mustafar, Obi-Wan Kenobi takes the blue saber. According to the official Databank, he keeps it on Tatooine for almost twenty years and then hands it to Luke. Luke loses it when Vader cuts off his hand on Cloud City in The Empire Strikes Back, and he builds a green saber of his own for Return of the Jedi. If you want the next stop, the blue saber turns up in Maz Kanata's collection, and our post on how Maz got it covers what the canon does and doesn't say. For more on the man who held it between Anakin and Luke, see Obi-Wan's lightsabers.
Vader builds a red one
Anakin's blue saber stays behind. According to the Databank, Vader builds his own replacement with a crimson blade, and it shows up in A New Hope, The Empire Strikes Back, Return of the Jedi and the Obi-Wan Kenobi series. It's a different weapon, not a recolored copy of Anakin's.
In the real world, the fight-version prop of Vader's saber from the original films sold at auction in 2025 for about $3.6 million, according to news coverage of the sale. Guinness World Records describes the hilt as built around a camera flash tube, dressed with plastic grips and bits of an early calculator.
Where each one went
| Saber | Blade | What happened |
|---|---|---|
| First saber | Blue | Cut in half by machinery on Geonosis |
| Borrowed saber | Green | Used for the duel with Dooku |
| Second saber | Blue | Taken by Obi-Wan after Mustafar, then passed to Luke, lost on Cloud City, later in Maz's collection |
| Vader's saber | Red | Built by Vader himself |
If you want one inspired by Anakin
We make several independent designs inspired by his look. The Anakin EP2 follows the Attack of the Clones look and the Anakin EP3 follows Revenge of the Sith, both with an 11 inch hilt. The Anakin SE is a simpler version at 11.8 inches, and the Fallen Knight is a darker take with an exposed kyber crystal. If you want the red side of the story, the Darth Vader EP5 is there too. You can see the whole set in the Anakin collection.
Choose your electronics before you fall for a hilt. Neopixel suits display and light contact, and Baselit is the pick if you plan to duel. The dueling guide and the Neopixel guide go through the trade-offs. We aren't affiliated with Lucasfilm or Disney, and these are our own designs, not official products.
